Next time it happened, I fought the panic. Remembered the articles. Told myself: “This ain’t real. Body’s rebooting. Chill.” Focused on wiggling my toes like the internet said. Took forever, but damn, it worked! Pressure vanished. Shadow-poofed. Pure relief.
Why This Nightmare Happens
Turns out triggers hide in plain sight:
- Sleeping on my back? Instant paralysis invite. My body hates it.
- Stressful week? Boss breathing down my neck? Paralyzed.
- Pull an all-nighter scrolling? Brain short-circuits.
Noticed these patterns after tracking sleep for 2 weeks in my Notes app. Started fluffing pillows to avoid back-sleeping. Set alarms to force sleep schedules. Changed my pillow to a firmer one. Cut coffee after noon. Huge difference.
My Fix for Now
Three things changed the game:
- Sleep sideways like a shrimp – no more back sleeping
- Phone in another room by 11 PM – killed the doomscrolling
- Wiggle toes first when paralyzed – signals the brain to “wake up” the body
Two weeks paralysis-free. Still get that sinking feeling sometimes when sleep gets messy, but now I just laugh. Brain glitch. Normal stuff. Jerry owes me coffee for that “haunted” nonsense.
